What is ISACA, How I Got Involved,
and the Story Behind Stories in Cyber
What is ISACA?
ISACA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the fields of cybersecurity, IT governance, and audit. It offers globally recognized certifications, such as the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), and Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC), which are some of the most respected credentials in the industry.
ISACA operates through local chapters around the world, such as the New Jersey Chapter, New York Chapter, and the Netherlands Chapter. These chapters provide a sense of community, offering opportunities for networking, education, and professional development. ISACA serves as a hub for professionals looking to deepen their expertise in audit, cybersecurity, risk management, and emerging technologies. Through its events, both large conferences and smaller local meetups, ISACA fosters a collaborative environment where members can share knowledge and best practices.
How I Got Involved
My journey with ISACA began during my time at Baruch College. I participated in a case study competition sponsored by ISACA, and after much effort, my team placed first, winning $12,000. This win sparked my curiosity about ISACA's commitment to students like me, leading me to attend one of their volunteer drives. During that event, I connected with several members who shared the value of ISACA and its role in the cybersecurity community. It was there that I met Kerwyn Velasco, who encouraged me to join as a volunteer. His passion and insights convinced me that I could grow while making an impact.
This opened the door to numerous opportunities, including co-founding the Stories in Cyber podcast with Kerwyn and Adnan Rafique.
The Story Behind Stories in Cyber
As my involvement with ISACA deepened, I joined forces with Kerwyn and Adnan Rafique to launch the Stories in Cyber podcast. Our aim was to share the journeys of professionals in cybersecurity, audit, and governance, highlighting the diversity of career paths and inspiring others to grow.
My Experience as an ISACA Volunteer
Becoming a volunteer for ISACA has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made. I’ve had the chance to contribute to an organization that’s not only helped me grow professionally but has also given me the opportunity to be part of an amazing community.
From volunteer drives to social events like summer socials on rooftops and golf outings, ISACA events blend networking with fun. One of the biggest highlights for me this year was attending SECON 2024, where I connected with industry leaders and explored key topics in security and governance.
These events aren't just about professional development—they're about building relationships and enjoying time with like-minded people. I’m grateful to be part of ISACA and look forward to continuing my involvement.
